The beginning of the end...

Hello fellow bloggers and other Internet enthusiasts, welcome to my first blog post ever! Since this is all a little new to me, I shall just let it flow and see what comes out of my fingers. First of all, there has been a lot of hype in the media about the Internet and the new acts out there that wish to censor it further. Well, maybe that isn't how they would prefer to phrase it, but bluntly that is what will happen if the acts are passed. The acts I speak of are the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act); they are causing uproar in every online community because they are all potentially being put in to danger.
While reading an article from the CBS news website, who are in favor of the SOPA and PIPA bills, acknowledge the fact that "there are already laws that protect copyrighted material, including the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). But while the DMCA focuses on removing specific, unauthorized content from the Internet, SOPA and PIPA instead target the platform -- that is, the site hosting the unauthorized content." The truth in that statement is what bothers me most about the news laws that are trying to be pushed through. I believe it is wrong to prosecute an entire website because a user, who had to agree to certain terms and conditions before joining the website, posted copyrighted material. The worst punishment I feel suitable for the situation is to simply block the user from the site, or even fine them, because it was their idea.
A lot of musicians out there who are up-and-coming use the Internet and its many resources to get their music heard by the world; but these bands usually make their music free anyways to promote their sound and reel in fans. Also, the "house" and "techno" music scenes are blowing up recently and so are DJs as well. What better way to get your mix-tape heard than by streaming it on the web for free?
I just believe that in this modern day society the Internet plays too much of a role in the lives of America to be censored in the way these laws could change it. Other major believers of my previous statement and other anti-SOPA/PIPA decided to blackout for 24 hours, showing just a page saying “the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet” in order to protest. Other participants in the blackout protest included a popular link-sharing site Reddit, along with BoingBoing, Mozilla, WordPress, TwitPic, MoveOn.org and the ICanHasCheezBurger network. Google supported the blackout with a protest doodle and message: "Tell Congress: Please don't censor the web," but the search engine didn’t actually black itself out.

  1. SOPA and PIPA are awful. I understan the governments need to regulate stuff like piracy, but this is not the way to do it

  2. Copyrights may soon have something in common to the dinosaur... EXTINCTION... We, as a country, may need to change the way we think about copyright laws because there is no 'cost effective' way to have an 'internet police' to constantly monitor each file (music, photos, etc.) that gets uploaded or displayed or played on any given web page each day. I love photography, but knowing how easy it is to have folks click the "save picture as" option when viewing a photo on a web page, I probably wouldn't make any money. However, if a technology could be created that incorporated the website URL or IP address in order for the picture to display or music to play, at that point the artist himself/herself might be able to somehow control who purchases material for use.

    1. That is exactly the type of solution this whole situation needs. Unfortunately, I feel like the creators of these acts and laws aren't thinking about all of the little people out there who use the Internet to promote themselves up to a point where people will start to pay for their talents. But, I also believe that once our generation starts seeping into the government there will be a hell of a lot of changes being made. Intelligent changes that protect the right items in question...
